  1. There are quite a few dormant volcanoes in the desert. That’s where some of the interesting rock formations come from in the desert. The Vermillion Cliffs are not too far north of the San Francisco Peaks, which is a dormant volcanic mountain range and one of the Navajo holy mountains.
