This earthquake follows a flurry of other seismic activity due North of New Zealand, near the Eastern islands of Papua New Guinea.

Over the past several days there have been MULTIPLE near 7.0M earthquakes (6.9M + 7.2M) which occurred near Papua New Guinea.  Additionally, over the past 24 hours, a new swarm has developed near the PNG Eastern islands.

There also were a series of earthquakes which began to occur reaching Southward from the 6.2M earthquake which occurred deep in the Asthenosphere below Fiji several days ago.

The earthquakes crept South towards New Zealand over the past few days as we saw two 5.0M+ events occur North of NZ — pressure heading South along the Pacific plate boundary.
